Dean is a medical biological scientist with a background in South African industry, where he developed and implemented employee return to work programmes to assist on the job productivity, absence and injury improvements.  He joined Unilever as a biokineticist in 2002, and became Dean became global health and productivity manager in 2007. He reports to the head of corporate occupational health, and his aim is to assist and integrate the speciality of employee health programmes and vitality into the strategic and operational activities in Unilever's regional businesses.
