IRS Conference: Managing Stress at Work

18th June 2008, Cavendish Conference Centre, London

While many employers have adopted the Health and Safety Executive’s stress management standards as well as a range of other stress audit and absence management tools, stress-related ill health continues to be the number one cause of absence in UK workplaces. Yet the evidence shows that stress can be a positive factor in employee performance given the right management practices and culture. This conference looks at successful approaches to manage stress, innovative interventions to boost employees’ wellbeing and engagement and how to manage the legal risk.

Two organisations who have won wide admiration for their approaches to managing stress will explain the elements or their approach: Kent Police whose model is being adopted by other organisations; and GSK UK whose holistic approach to building employee ‘resilience’ shows how stress can be harnessed for the good of both employee and employer. A leading lawyer who specialises on health and employment law will look at trends in case law and the practical steps employers can take to manage their risk of high compensation pay-outs and disciplinary issues.

Delegates will also hear leading experts give an update on the research base for mental health at work and business psychologists share evidence-based approaches to successfully managing stress and raising productivity. Some of the most innovative thinkers will show how to develop a strategy to tackle stress, and ultimately how to enable employees to lead happier, more fulfilled and more productive lives.
